Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project

The West Oxford Agricultural Society, presenter of the Fryeburg Fair, partnered with the Institute For Figuring in 2011 to participate in their internationally known Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project.

Gale Bellew, Fryeburg’s Fiber Center Superintendent, organized a statewide effort to create a Satellite of this Worldwide 'Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project' created by Margaret & Christine Wertheim of The Institute For Figuring, Los Angeles.

It was shown at The Fiber Center during the 2012 Fryeburg Fair and won the Maine Agricultural Fair Association’s 'Outstanding Large Fair Award'.

Due to the success and magnitude of the exhibit, it will be shown again at this year’s 2013 fair.

DO NOT MISS this incredible art installation! More than 150 individuals from Maine and around the country contributed
more than 950 individual crocheted items to create the Maine Reef!

With thanks to the West Oxford Agricultural Society and their support to the Fiber Arts, Maine has joined Africa, Australia, The UK, Ireland, and Latvia; in the US, Arizona, Chicago, Gainesville, Indiana, New York and the Smithsonian
in creating and exhibiting a Crochet Coral Reef Project.
